What information is optional when creating a Mealeez account?

When creating a Mealeez account, some fields on the registration form are optional. While not required for account creation, providing this information helps personalize your Mealeez experience. You can always add or update this information later in your profile settings. Here's a breakdown of the optional fields:

  • Profile Picture: Upload a profile picture to personalize your Mealeez account. This picture may be visible to other users if you comment on recipes.

  • Allergies (Highly Recommended): While adding allergies during signup is optional, we strongly recommend doing so. This allows Mealeez to start personalizing your experience immediately. You can specify your allergies in two ways:

    • Allergy Groups: Mealeez uses the UK standard 14 main allergen groups. Tapping a group name highlights it:

      • Red: Avoid this group entirely.

      • Amber: May react moderately to this group.

      • Off (No Highlight): Safe to consume this group.

    • Allergy Ingredients: Fine-tune your allergy profile by specifying individual ingredients. Start typing an ingredient, tap it when it appears, and then highlight it:

      • Red: Avoid this ingredient.

      • Amber: May react moderately to this ingredient.

      • Green: Safe to consume this ingredient.

  • Restaurant Distance: Set your preferred search radius for restaurants, up to 150 miles. This helps Mealeez find restaurants near you that meet your allergy needs.

  • Notification Preferences: Control which notifications you receive from Mealeez:

    • Recipes: Receive a daily notification at about "Today's New Recipe."

    • Restaurants: Get notified about new restaurant additions or menu updates.

    • Emails: Subscribe to the Mealeez newsletter (every 3-4 months) for updates on new features and tips.

Why are these fields optional?

We understand you might not want to share all your information immediately. These fields are optional to give you control. You can always add or update them later by editing your profile after registration.

I'm having trouble logging in. What can I do?

  • If you're having trouble logging in to Mealeez, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Double-check your login details:

    • Email Address: Make sure you're using the correct email address associated with your Mealeez account. Check for any typos.
    • Password: Ensure you're entering your password correctly. Remember that passwords are case-sensitive. If you're unsure, try resetting your password (see our FAQ: "I forgot my password. What should I do?").

    2. Check your internet connection:

    • A stable internet connection is required to log in. Try visiting other websites or apps to see if you have a connection. If your connection is unstable, try restarting your router or connecting to a different network (e.g., Wi-Fi or mobile data).

    3. App-Specific Troubleshooting (if applicable):

    • Check for app updates: Make sure you have the latest version of the Mealeez app installed. Outdated versions can sometimes cause login issues. Visit the Google Play Store (Android) to check for updates.
    • Restart the app: Force-close the Mealeez app and then reopen it. This can sometimes resolve minor glitches.
    • Reinstall the app (as a last resort): If other steps don't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Mealeez app.

    4. Website-Specific Troubleshooting (if applicable):

    • Clear cache and cookies: Your web browser stores temporary files (cache and cookies) that can sometimes interfere with website functionality. Clearing them might resolve the issue. Instructions for clearing cache and cookies vary by browser. You can usually find this option in your browser's settings or history.
    • Try a different browser: See if you can log in using a different web browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). This can help determine if the problem is browser-specific.
    • Try a different device: If possible, try logging in on a different computer or mobile device.

    5. Contact Support:

If you've tried all of these steps and you're still unable to log in, please contact our support team at [email protected]. Please provide as much detail as possible about the issue you're experiencing, including any error messages you see and the steps you've already taken.

    • Amber: Might be suitable/discretion required. Again, based on your allergy profile and the ingredients/groups selected as moderate.
    • Green: Mealeez could not detect unsafe ingredients. This should be safe, but care should still be taken and ingredients should be confirmed when ordering.
  3. View Ingredients (subscription required): Tapping on any part of a menu item will show you its full ingredient list, highlighting sever/moderate allergens based on your allergy profile.

  4. Filter Items (subscription required): Tapping this option will filter through all menu items and display only those that have been marked as safe or moderately safe, hiding any menu item with ingredients you have marked as severe. This allows you to very quickly see what you can have when dining out or ordering from that restaurant.

How do I use the food label scanner?

Mealeez's food label scanner helps you quickly identify potential allergens in packaged foods. Here's how to use it:

On the App & Website:

  1. Access the Label Scanner: Tap the "Label Scan" icon on the bottom menu (alternatively, find the "Scan Food Label" link on the website's left menu).

  2. Grant Permissions: Mealeez needs access to your device's camera and/or file storage to scan labels. You'll be prompted to grant these permissions.

    • Camera Access: Allow Mealeez to access your camera to take a photo of the food label.

    • File Access (app only): Granting file access allows you to upload an image of a food label from your device's photo library.

  3. Position the Label:

    • Using the Camera: Hold your device steady so the food label is clearly visible within the camera's viewfinder. Make sure the label is well-lit and in focus. If using the app, you may be able to tap the screen to focus.

    • Uploading an Image: If you've granted file access (only required in the app), you can select an image of a food label from your device.

  4. Scan the Label: Tap the "Scan" button.

  5. Review the Results: Mealeez will process the label information and display the results. You'll see one of the following:

    • Allergen Warnings: Highlights or warnings about any ingredients that match your allergy profile (using the red/amber/green system).

    • No Allergens Detected: Mealeez will let you know if no unsafe ingredients have been detected based on your profile.

  6. Free Scans: If the scan results indicate that the product is safe based on your allergy profile, the scan is free and doesn't count towards your monthly free scan limit! You get 6 free scans per month where allergens are detected.

  7. Interpreting the Results (Crucial): It's important to understand that the label scanner is a tool to assist you, not a replacement for your own careful label reading.

    • Accuracy: The accuracy of the scan depends on the quality of the label image and the clarity of the ingredient list. A blurry or poorly lit image can affect the results.

    • Unknown Ingredients: Mealeez has a large database of ingredients, but it may not recognize every single ingredient, especially if it's a less common or newly introduced one.

    • False Positives: Be aware that the label scanner may pick up on phrases such as "Free From Sulphites" or "No Eggs" in the image you provide, and could interpret that incorrectly.

    • Cross-Contamination: In the US, "may contain" warnings are optional for manufacturers, so even if the label scanner doesn't find any potential allergens, it cannot guarantee there was no cross-contamination during food production.

    • The Label Scanner is a Guide: While the food label scanner is very accurate, it should be used as a guide only. You are responsible for reviewing food labels yourself to ensure your safety. Always double-check for any potentially unsafe ingredients.

    • Precautionary Principle: If you have any doubts about the safety of a food, it's always best to err on the side of caution and avoid it.

Mealeez Free and Subscription Scans:

  • Free Scans: You get 6 free scans per month where allergens are detected. However, scans that show "No Unsuitable Ingredients Detected" are always free and do not count towards your monthly limit. This means you can check as many safe foods as you like!

  • Subscription Scans: A Mealeez Plus subscription unlocks unlimited scans, giving you the freedom to check as many food labels as you need.

Mealeez in Action: A Restaurant Scenario

One of the biggest challenges when dining out is understanding the exact ingredients in your meal. While restaurants are legally required to disclose major allergens, they often fall short of listing all ingredients in a user-friendly way. Sifting through walls of text to identify potential issues is time-consuming and frustrating.

The Problem: Ingredient Overload

Consider this "Nacho Burrito" example:

Imagine trying to quickly determine if this item is safe for someone who avoids tomatillos and limits garlic. Reading through this dense text is difficult and time-consuming, especially when faced with hundreds of similar menu items. It's also hard to figure out if modifications are possible.

How Mealeez Simplifies Dining Out

Mealeez offers a streamlined approach to managing dietary restrictions while dining out.

1. Personalized Sub-Accounts:

Create unlimited sub-accounts for friends and family, each with their own dietary profiles.

2. Customized Ingredient Profiles:

Within each sub-account, specify ingredients to avoid. Use a red highlight for severe reactions (must avoid) and amber for moderate reactions (limit intake). For example, set tomatillos to red and garlic to amber.

3. Visual Menu Analysis:

When viewing a restaurant's menu within Mealeez, each dish is color-coded based on the user's profile. Red indicates the presence of a "must avoid" ingredient, amber highlights a "limit intake" ingredient, and green signifies a safe option.

This visual system allows for quick identification of safe choices and facilitates discussions with restaurant staff about potential modifications.

What if the Restaurant Isn't on Mealeez?

Mealeez covers over 100,000 restaurant locations in the UK and US. However, if your chosen restaurant isn't listed, you still have options:

1. Food Label Scanner:

If the restaurant provides a full ingredient list, use Mealeez's Food Label Scanner. It uses the same color-coding system to highlight potential allergens and problem ingredients based on your profile.

2. Scan QR Code (Subscription Required):

For restaurants without ingredient lists, use the Scan QR Code feature. This generates a time-limited, anonymous code that your server can scan. This displays your specific dietary restrictions, allowing the server to easily communicate your needs to the kitchen. The code expires after 5 minutes, ensuring privacy. Even more importantly, the person you are sharing with has no need to have an account on Mealeez or to have Mealeez installed on their device.

In short, Mealeez empowers you to dine out with confidence, knowing that your dietary needs are clearly communicated and easily managed.

How do I search for groceries?

Mealeez has one of the most powerful shopping experience for food-allergy sufferers in the UK & US, with our huge groceries area that allows you to find safe products and compare prices across multiple stores. And the best part is we've made it as simple as possible for you to use.

Getting Started

The first thing to note is that the initial view you see when heading to the Groceries area is for any saved grocery items you have. This is of particular importance because if any product ingredients change, we want to warn you if anything becomes unsuitable.

Searching For Groceries

To conduct a search, type in your query in the search bar at the top of the screen. Mealeez checks your query against product names and brand names held in our database. It'll then check each item for ingredients in your food allergy profile, returning results that are marked "safe" or "caution". PLUS subscribers also have the ability to fine-tune the results using the Filter option at the top right.

Viewing Grocery Items

Tapping a grocery item will bring up its details, where you can see further information such as ingredients (if there are any allergies, they will be marked in red (severe) or amber (caution) depending on your allergy profile) and the ability to bookmark the item. You'll also see a list of stores the item is available in and the current price information we have for it. You can then tap the "VISIT" button to be taken directly to that grocery items product page.

What Stores Are Covered?

We currently only show information for UK & US supermarkets at this time. The stores we cover are:

UK Stores:

  • Asda
  • Co-op
  • Discount Dragon
  • Home Bargains
  • Iceland
  • Low Price Foods
  • Morrisons
  • Ocado
  • Poundland
  • Sainsbury's
  • Tesco
  • Waitrose

US Stores:

  • BJ's Wholesale Club
  • H-E-B
  • Hy-Vee
  • Ingles Curbside
  • Lowes Foods
  • Needler's Fresh Market
  • Target
  • Trader Joe's
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart

How is this different to other price comparison websites?

There are two fundamental differences between Mealeez and other popular price comparison websites. The first is that other price comparison sites are just that. They are focussing on finding you the best price. The other difference is that Mealeez only lists food items - and more importantly - it only shows food items that are suitable to eat!

Why no real product images?

Product images are not currently displayed due to copyright restrictions. We do not hold licenses to show them on the Mealeez website or the Android app. Instead, we have used AI to generate images to help you when navigating the grocers area.

Why do some searches take a long time?

Your food allergies and a products ingredients may change at any time, so Mealeez always conducts a "fresh" search when checking grocery items. That means it checks every single ingredient before determining if an item is suitable or not, before showing results. For quicker searches, try being more specific in what you are looking for. For example, searching for "vegan" will return all suitable vegan results, but searching for "vegan sausages" will be quicker as there are already less results to check your allergies against.

Reading Labels

Go to category

How do I create a "safe list" of ingredients to look for on food labels?

Creating a "safe list" of ingredients is a proactive way to simplify food label reading and quickly identify foods that are likely to be safe for you. This list contains ingredients you know you can tolerate. Here's how to create and use one:

  1. Start with Your Known Safe Foods: Think about the foods you regularly eat without any allergic reactions. Make a list of the key ingredients in those foods.

  2. Check Product Labels: When you're at the grocery store or looking at food labels at home, check the ingredient lists of the foods you know are safe. Add any additional safe ingredients you find to your list.

  3. Organize Your List: You can organize your safe list in several ways:

    • Alphabetical Order: This makes it easy to quickly find a specific ingredient.
    • By Food Category: Grouping safe ingredients by food category (e.g., grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins) can be helpful.
    • Add Them On Mealeez: Mealeez allows you to mark ingredients as "safe" in your Profile, meaning they will not be flagged when scanning food labels or on restaurant menus when dining out.
  4. Use Your Safe List When Reading Labels: When you're checking a new food label, scan the ingredient list first for any ingredients from your safe list. If you see several ingredients from your safe list, the product is more likely to be a safe choice.

  5. Combine with Allergen Avoidance: Your safe list is a complement to your allergen avoidance strategy, not a replacement for it. You should always check for your specific allergens, even if the label contains ingredients from your safe list. Ingredients may be processed in facilities that also process your allergens, so cross-contamination is still a risk.

Example:

Let's say you know you can safely eat rice, chicken, carrots, and broccoli. Your initial safe list might look like this:

  • Rice
  • Chicken
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli

Then, when checking labels, you might find that some products also contain safe ingredients like "olive oil," "salt," and "pepper." You would add those to your safe list.

Cross-Contamination

How can I prevent cross-contamination with food allergens?

Cross-contamination occurs when a safe food comes into contact with an allergen, even in tiny amounts. This can trigger an allergic reaction. Preventing cross-contamination is crucial for managing food allergies. Here's how you can minimize the risk:

At Home:

  • Separate Cutting Boards: Use separate cutting boards for allergens and non-allergen foods. Ideally, use different colored cutting boards to avoid confusion.
  • Dedicated Utensils: Use dedicated utensils (knives, spoons, spatulas, etc.) for preparing allergen-free foods.
  • Careful Storage: Store allergens separately from other foods, preferably on a high shelf or in a sealed container. This prevents accidental spills or contact.
  • Thorough Cleaning: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after preparing food. Clean countertops and cooking surfaces thoroughly, especially after contact with allergens.
  • Read Labels Carefully: Always check food labels for "May contain" or "Produced in a facility that also processes" statements, as these indicate a risk of cross-contamination.

When Dining Out:

  • Communicate Clearly: Inform restaurant staff about your allergies and the severity of your reactions. Be specific about which allergens you need to avoid.
  • Ask About Preparation Methods: Inquire about how food is prepared and whether there are any cross-contamination risks in the kitchen.
  • Choose Wisely: Select dishes that are less likely to have cross-contamination risks. For example, avoid dishes with complex sauces or those prepared in shared fryers.
  • Be Assertive: If you're not confident that the restaurant can safely accommodate your allergies, it's okay to choose a different restaurant.

Other Situations:

  • Shared Kitchens: Be extra cautious in shared kitchens, such as those in workplaces or shared housing.
  • Buffets: Buffets pose a high risk of cross-contamination due to shared serving utensils.
  • Parties: It's best to bring your own safe food to parties to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

Dining Out with Allergies

How can I dine out safely with food allergies?

Dining out with food allergies requires careful planning and communication. Here are some tips to help you dine out safely and confidently:

Before You Go:

  • Research Restaurants: Look for restaurants that are known to be allergy-friendly or that offer a variety of options that can be easily modified. Check online reviews or allergy-specific restaurant guides.
  • Call Ahead: Contact the restaurant in advance to inform them about your allergies. Ask about their food preparation methods, cross-contamination risks, and whether they can accommodate your needs. If they seem unsure or dismissive, consider choosing a different restaurant.
  • Plan Your Meal: Look at the restaurant's menu online (if available) and identify dishes that are likely to be safe or easily adaptable.
  • Check The Menu On Mealeez: Check our Restaurants area to see if there is a location nearby. You can then check the menu to see if any dishes will be suitable for you based on your allergy profile.

At the Restaurant:

  • Communicate Clearly: When you arrive at the restaurant, inform your server about your allergies. Be specific about which allergens you need to avoid and the severity of your reactions. Don't be afraid to ask questions about ingredients or preparation methods.
  • Share Your Allergy List With Mealeez: Many restaurants now use a tablet or mobile device to take your order. You can ask your server if they have the ability to scan QR codes to share your allergy information with them. They can then take this information into the kitchen to compare against the ingredients the premises use for preparing your meal.
  • Use an Allergy Card (Optional): If you have a complex set of allergies or are dining in a foreign country, consider using an allergy card that lists your allergies in the local language.
  • Double-Check: Before you order, double-check with your server or the kitchen staff to ensure that your meal will be prepared safely and without any cross-contamination risks.
  • Be Specific: Don't just say "I have a food allergy." Be clear about which specific allergens you need to avoid (e.g., "I'm allergic to peanuts and tree nuts").
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination Traps: Be mindful of common cross-contamination risks, such as shared fryers, buffets, and salad bars.
  • Trust Your Gut: If you're not confident that the restaurant can safely accommodate your allergies, it's okay to choose a different restaurant or order a simpler dish.

After Your Meal:

  • Provide Feedback: If you had a positive experience, let the restaurant know! This encourages them to continue their allergy-friendly practices. If you had a negative experience, politely share your concerns so they can improve.

How can I travel safely with food allergies?

Traveling with food allergies requires careful planning and preparation. Here are some tips to help you travel safely and enjoy your trip:

Before You Go:

  • Research Your Destination: Investigate the local cuisine, common allergens in the region, and availability of allergy-friendly restaurants or grocery stores.
  • Learn Key Phrases: If traveling to a country where you don't speak the language, learn key phrases related to your allergies (e.g., "I am allergic to...", "Does this contain...?", "No nuts, please"). Consider using a translation app or allergy card.
  • Pack Safe Foods: Bring a supply of safe snacks and meals, especially for long journeys or if you're unsure about food availability at your destination.
  • Inform Airlines/Transportation: If flying, inform the airline about your allergies when booking your tickets. Inquire about their allergy policies and meal options.
  • Carry Your Medication: Always carry your epinephrine auto-injector (e.g., EpiPen) and any other necessary medications with you, in your carry-on luggage. Make sure they are easily accessible.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical expenses related to allergic reactions.

During Your Trip:

  • Be Prepared: When eating out, communicate your allergies clearly to restaurant staff, just as you would at home. Use an allergy card if helpful.
  • Read Labels Carefully: Even familiar brands may have different ingredients or manufacturing processes in other countries. Always read labels carefully.
  • Be Cautious with Unfamiliar Foods: Be extra cautious when trying new or unfamiliar foods. Ask about ingredients and preparation methods.
  • Carry Snacks: Having safe snacks with you can prevent you from having to rely on unfamiliar or potentially unsafe food options.
  • Know Your Emergency Plan: Make sure you know what to do in case of an allergic reaction. Have your emergency contact information readily available.

The label scanner isn't working. What should I do?

If the label scanner in the Mealeez app isn't working, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check Camera Permissions: Mealeez needs permission to access your device's camera to use the label scanner.

    • On Android: The location varies slightly by device, but it's usually found in Settings > Apps > Mealeez > Permissions. Make sure camera permission is granted.
  2. Ensure Proper Lighting: Poor lighting can affect the scanner's ability to recognize the label. Try scanning the label in a well-lit area. Avoid shadows or glare on the label.

  3. Improve Image Quality:

    • Hold the Device Steady: Hold your device steady and make sure the label is in focus. A blurry image can prevent the scanner from working correctly.
    • Clean the Camera Lens: A dirty camera lens can also affect image quality. Gently clean the lens with a soft cloth.
    • Move Closer or Further Away: Try adjusting the distance between your device and the label. The label should fill most of the camera's viewfinder, but it shouldn't be too close or too far away.
  4. Check for App Updates: Make sure you're using the latest version of the Mealeez app. Updates often include improvements to the label scanner.

  5. Restart Your Device: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches.

  6. Test with a Different Label: Try scanning a different food label to see if the issue is with a specific label or with the scanner itself. Some labels might be damaged or poorly printed, which can affect scanning.

  7. Try a Different Browser (website only): If you're using the website, try a different browser to see if that resolves the issue.

  8. Contact Support: If none of these steps resolve the issue, please contact us at [email protected]. Please provide as much detail as possible about the issue you're experiencing, including your device model, operating system version, and the steps you've already taken. It's also helpful to include a photo of the label you're trying to scan (if possible).

What information can I add to my profile?

Your Mealeez profile is where you can customize your experience and provide information that helps Mealeez better serve your needs. You can add the following information to your profile:

  • Profile Picture: A profile picture helps personalize your Mealeez account. It may be visible to other users if you leave a comment on a recipe.

  • Allergies: Adding your allergies is highly recommended. This allows Mealeez to immediately start filtering search results, flagging unsafe ingredients when scanning food labels, highlighting recipe ingredients and providing relevant restaurant information based on your specific allergy needs. You can specify your allergies in two ways:

    • Recipes: Receive a daily notification at 10 am about the "Today's New Recipe."

    • Restaurants: Get notified about new restaurant additions or menu updates.

What are the most common food allergens?

While anyone can develop an allergy to virtually any food, a small group of foods accounts for the vast majority of food allergies. Being aware of these common allergens is crucial for managing food allergies and preventing allergic reactions.

In the UK:

In the UK, 14 major allergens must be declared on food labels. These are sometimes referred to as the "14 major allergens."

The 14 major allergens in the UK are:

  • Celery: This includes celery stalks, leaves, seeds, and celeriac. Celery can be found in sauces, soups, and seasonings.

  • Cereals containing gluten: This includes wheat, rye, barley, oats, and spelt, as well as any products containing these grains. Gluten is a protein found in these grains that can trigger reactions in people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

  • Crustaceans: This includes crabs, lobsters, prawns, and shrimp. Shellfish allergies can be severe.

  • Eggs: Eggs are a common ingredient in many foods, including baked goods, sauces, and processed foods.

  • Fish: This includes all types of fish. Fish allergies are more common in adults.

  • Lupin: Lupin is a legume that can cause allergic reactions. It can be found in flour, baked goods, and some vegetarian products.

  • Milk: Cow's milk allergy is one of the most common childhood food allergies. It's important to be aware of hidden sources of dairy.

  • Molluscs: This includes mussels, clams, oysters, and scallops.

  • Mustard: Mustard is a common ingredient in condiments, sauces, and dressings.

  • Nuts (Tree Nuts): This category includes a variety of nuts, such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, and hazelnuts. Nut allergies can be severe.

  • Peanuts: Peanut allergy is often severe and can cause life-threatening reactions. Peanuts are legumes, but they're often grouped with tree nuts due to similar allergenic properties.

  • Sesame: Sesame allergy is becoming increasingly recognized as a significant allergen.

  • Soya: Soya is a common ingredient in processed foods.

  • Sulphites: Sulphites are used as preservatives in some foods and drinks. They can trigger reactions in some people, particularly those with asthma.

UK vs. US Allergen Labeling:

It's important to note that allergen labeling regulations differ between the UK and the US. While there is significant overlap, there are some key differences:

  • Number of Allergens: The UK mandates labeling for 14 major allergens, while the US focuses on the "Big 8" (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish). This means some allergens that are common in the UK (like celery, mustard, lupin, and sulphites) might not be explicitly listed on US food labels unless they are present in significant amounts.

  • Labeling Practices: While both regions require clear labeling of allergens, the specific wording and formatting may vary.

For US Users:

What is a gluten allergy/intolerance and what are its symptoms?

It's important to distinguish between two main conditions related to gluten:

  • Celiac Disease: This is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the small intestine when gluten is consumed.
  • Gluten Sensitivity (Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity): This is a less well-understood condition where individuals experience symptoms similar to celiac disease after consuming gluten, but without the same immune response or intestinal damage.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity can vary greatly, but some common ones include:

  • Digestive Issues: Diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or sluggish
  • Headaches: Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Skin Problems: Rash, eczema, or dermatitis herpetiformis (an itchy, blistering skin rash)
  • Neurological Symptoms: Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Weight Loss or Poor Weight Gain (in children): Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight
  • Iron-Deficiency Anemia: Low iron levels due to poor absorption

Diagnosis:

If you suspect you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it's crucial to see a doctor for proper diagnosis. This usually involves blood tests, stool tests, and sometimes a biopsy of the small intestine.

Management:

The only treatment for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity is to follow a strict gluten-free diet. This means avoiding all foods containing wheat, rye, barley, and sometimes oats (depending on individual tolerance). It's important to read labels carefully and be aware of hidden sources of gluten.

  • Skin: Hives, itching, rash, eczema, swelling (especially of the face, lips, or tongue)
  • Digestive System: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps
  • Respiratory System: Wheezing, coughing, runny nose, difficulty breathing
  • Oral Allergy Syndrome: Itching or tingling in the mouth, lips, or tongue
  • Anaphylaxis: In severe cases, sesame allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.

Increasing Prevalence:

Sesame allergy is becoming more common, and researchers are still investigating the reasons for this increase.

Management:

The primary way to manage a sesame allergy is to avoid all foods that may contain sesame. This can be challenging, as sesame is used in many different products, sometimes under less obvious names. Careful label reading is essential.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

If you suspect a sesame allergy, it's important to consult with an allergist for a proper diagnosis. They may perform tests such as skin prick tests or blood tests. For severe reactions, especially anaphylaxis, epinephrine auto-injectors (like an EpiPen) are the primary treatment.

What are sulphites and what are their effects?

Sulphites are preservatives that are added to some foods and drinks to prevent spoilage and maintain color. While they are naturally occurring in some foods, they are also added artificially. Some people are sensitive to sulphites, experiencing allergy-like or asthmatic reactions. It's important to note that reactions to sulphites are often referred to as a sensitivity rather than a true allergy, as they don't always involve the same immune system mechanisms.

How Sulphites Affect People:

Sulphites can trigger a variety of reactions, particularly in people with asthma. Some common effects include:

  • Respiratory Problems: Wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, asthma attacks. This is the most common reaction.
  • Skin Reactions: Hives, itching, rash, flushing.
  • Digestive Issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps (less common).
  • Headaches: Some people report headaches after consuming sulphites.

Foods and Drinks That May Contain Sulphites:

Sulphites are used in a variety of foods and drinks, including:

  • Dried Fruits: Sulphites are often used to preserve the color of dried fruits.
  • Wine: Red and white wines can contain sulphites, which are produced naturally during fermentation, and more may be added.
  • Beer: Some beers contain sulphites.
  • Processed Foods: Many processed foods, such as deli meats, sausages, and some canned goods, may contain sulphites.
  • Vinegar: Some vinegars, especially balsamic vinegar, may contain sulphites.
  • Fruit Juices: Some fruit juices, especially grape juice, may contain added sulphites.
  • Restaurant Foods: Sulphites may be used in restaurant kitchens in various dishes.

Labeling:

In many countries, including the UK, food labels must indicate the presence of added sulphites above a certain level. Sulphites are often listed as sulphur dioxide (SO2) or by their specific name (e.g., sodium sulphite, potassium metabisulphite).

Management:

The best way to manage sulphite sensitivity is to avoid foods and drinks known to contain them. Read labels carefully and be aware of potential hidden sources.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

If you suspect you are sensitive to sulphites, it's a good idea to consult with your doctor. While there isn't a specific test for sulphite sensitivity, they can help you identify triggers and manage symptoms. If you experience severe respiratory reactions, follow your asthma action plan (if you have one) and seek medical attention if necessary.

What is anaphylaxis and what should I do?

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can develop rapidly and requires immediate medical attention. It's crucial to recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and to act quickly.

What Happens During Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis occurs when the body's immune system overreacts to an allergen (such as food, insect stings, or medication), releasing chemicals that cause a cascade of symptoms.

Symptoms of Anaphylaxis:

Symptoms of anaphylaxis can appear suddenly and worsen quickly. They may include:

  • Respiratory Problems: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, stridor (a high-pitched whistling sound when breathing), coughing, tightness in the chest or throat, swelling of the tongue or throat.
  • Cardiovascular Problems: Dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, collapse.
  • Skin Reactions: Hives (itchy, raised patches of skin), itching, redness, swelling (especially of the face, lips, or eyes).
  • Digestive Problems: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps.
  • Other Symptoms: Anxiety, confusion, feeling of impending doom.

What to Do If You Suspect Anaphylaxis:

  1. Use an Epinephrine Auto-Injector (if available): If you or someone you are with experiences symptoms of anaphylaxis and has an epinephrine auto-injector (such as an EpiPen), use it immediately. Inject the epinephrine into the outer thigh, even through clothing if necessary.

  2. Call Emergency Services: Immediately call your local emergency number (999 in the UK, 911 in the US) or ask someone else to do so. Tell the operator that someone is having an anaphylactic reaction.

  3. Lay the Person Down: If possible, lay the person down flat with their legs slightly elevated. Do not make them walk or move unnecessarily.

  4. Administer a Second Dose (if necessary): If symptoms do not improve within 5-10 minutes, a second dose of epinephrine can be given if another auto-injector is available.

  5. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Even after using an epinephrine auto-injector, it's crucial to seek immediate medical attention. A second wave of symptoms can sometimes occur, and further treatment may be necessary.

What are common skin reactions caused by allergies?

Allergic reactions can often manifest on the skin in various ways. These skin reactions can be uncomfortable, itchy, and sometimes even painful. It's important to recognize the different types of skin reactions that can be caused by allergies.

Common Allergic Skin Reactions:

  • Hives (Urticaria): Hives are raised, red or pink welts that can appear anywhere on the body. They are often itchy and can change size and location quickly. Hives can be a sign of a mild or more serious allergic reaction.

  • Angioedema: Angioedema is swelling, usually deeper in the skin, affecting areas like the face, lips, tongue, throat, or eyelids. It can occur with or without hives. Angioedema can be dangerous if it affects the throat or tongue, as it can restrict breathing.

  • Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can be exacerbated by allergies. It causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. While not always directly caused by an allergy, allergies can trigger eczema flare-ups.

  • Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a rash caused by direct contact with an allergen or irritant. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type of eczema triggered by an allergen, such as certain metals, fragrances, or plants. It causes redness, itching, and sometimes blisters in the area of contact.

  • Rash: A general term for a change in the skin's appearance. Allergic rashes can vary in appearance and location. They may be red, bumpy, itchy, or scaly.

What to Do for Allergic Skin Reactions:

  • Mild Reactions: For mild skin reactions like a few hives or mild itching, you can try an over-the-counter antihistamine to relieve symptoms. Avoid scratching, which can worsen the itching and irritation.
  • Severe Reactions: If you experience severe skin reactions, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, seek immediate medical attention. This could be a sign of anaphylaxis.
  • Consult a Doctor or Allergist: If you experience frequent or persistent skin reactions, it's important to consult with a doctor or allergist to identify the cause and develop a treatment plan.
